Sarah's Summer Summary:

(Yes, I am absolutely terrible at keeping this journal updated. Let's pretend that instead of me spending a summer procrastinating, I instead spent it busy, busy, busy--which is true, I was busy...but I was also procrastinating...Gotta get it all out of my system before school starts, right?)

This summer started out on the right foot.

It truly began when Abby and I burned our Transatlantic Romanticism and Transatlantic Studies textbooks.

See how happy that made us? It's not our fault that the bookstore wouldn't buy them back. It should be a crime to make a student spend $100 on textbooks for a class that they won't be able to sell back. On the upside, Abby and I got quite a kick out of burning them. We are such rebels.

I actually titled this picture: FIRE! MUHAHAHAHA!

At the beginning of June, my sister Emma graduated from high school. If you don't know Emma, let me just say that she's exceptionally talented, smart and pretty. I was super proud of her.

Anna and I got a little bored waiting for the ceremony to start though... so we entertained ourselves with my camera. And now our entertainment can entertain you!

YAY HAPPY!!!1!

THUMBS UP!

SAD :'(

FISH FACES

WINKI '.~

While we were waiting, Emma stopped by to drop her purse off with us. Doesn't she look stellar in those oh-so-flattering maroon robes? (hint, the correct answer, especially if Emma is asking you is: "Yes. Yes ma'am."

We had a lot of family and friends over for Emma's graduation party. However, during the festivities, Emma's prized lawn flamingos were kidnapped and held for ransom by two notorious criminals known as 'Uncle John' and 'Sarah.' Thankfully Patty and Lou were safely returned without suffering (too much) emotional damage:

A few weeks later Abby and I met at Johnson Creek to hang out for a day. It was then that we discovered that there is Nothing To Do in Johnson Creek. It was pretty sad. We drove around the entirety of that little town in horror at the lack of things to do. It was only when we went in search of some place to have supper did we discover Waterton and civilization:

About a week later I went to visit Laila in Chicago. This part of my summer recap I call:

The Trip to Sweden Part II (minus Sweden)
(basically because we did everything we ever did while we were in Sweden, except we packed it into 48 hours--because we're just that awesome)

On the 16th of June, I got up at 5:45 am to catch a bus to O'Hare airport. Around 10:15 we arrived at the airport, and Laila met me. We fell into easy and familiar conversation--it didn't seem like a year had passed at all. We were able to talk to each other as if we had seen each other just the day before.

The first thing the two of us did was head straight for IKEA. We wandered around and looked at the furniature and took pictures. I found three new cactuses which I named Lars Jr. Gunilla and Astrid. After having a lunch of Swedish meatballs we headed to the mall and went window shopping--making sure to stop in H&M.

We tried to find ice cream, but were unsuccessful, so we went back to Laila's house, dropped off my stuff and took a tour of Wheaton--which included the cutest candy shop known to man (someone put a roof on an alley and built a narrow candy shop there. It was adorable). Then we stopped in a cafe and had us a proper fika.

After our fika we went back to Laila's house to play guitar hero (Laila kicked my butt, I was so awful at it), then we chatted online with Adam killing time until we had to go meet Laila's mom and her cousin Cameron.

We had supper at the restaurant that Laila used to work at--she regaled me with horror stories of that place while we were in Sweden. After supper we all went and had ice cream together before we went back to Laila's. Laila's mom has a facebook profile, and takes fiendish delight in uploading pictures of Laila and her siblings as children and trying to hook them up with random Swedish people they knew when Laila was a baby.

Once Cameron had been bathed and put to bed, Laila and I went to go see Made of Honor--which was a really great movie. Then we went back to her house and collapsed into bed.

The next morning we decided, totally spur of the moment, to take the train into the city. Naturally we left the house ten minutes before the train was supposed to arrive at the station, and raced to the platform to make it. We took the train into the city (chatting with the people from Idaho who sat across from us), and I was a total "girl-from-a-small-town" as we pulled into the city and then started walking around. I was looking around at all of the tall buildings, taking pictures of them left and right--a total tourist.

We walked to Millenium Park to see the giant shiny bean thingy. It was awesome. And shiny. Then we went to Navy Pier where we had lunch at McDonalds and I went to Build-a-Bear and bought Laila Bear.

Tired of walking, we decided to take the free trolley part of the way back to the station. Our trolley driver was, appropriately, named Christian. Laila and I got a kick out of it.

When we got back to Laila's house, I finished packing and she dropped me back off at O'Hare to catch my bus back home.

What we did in those 48 hours that we also did in Sweden:

+ Started and ended the trip at O'Hare

+ Walked. A lot.
+ Ate at McDonalds
+ Met someone named Christian/Kristian

Pictures of the trip (in no particular order):

(This is where Oprah lives apparently)

There were a lot of storms early this summer. I live in the middle of all of that red on the tv screen below, fun times, let me tell you.

My friend Katie asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding (which will be in November) so I got fitted for and bought my bridesmaid dress. Ignore the stupid looks on my face, concentrate instead on the pretty dress:

For Abby's twenty second birthday I went to visit her. We spent most of our day driving around in big circles because we are absolutely terrible at planning things. Abby bought the cell phone she's been dreaming of for years (rather, she's wanted a cell phone for years, she'd only been dreaming of that particular phone for a few weeks).

I bought Abby three birthday presents and drew pictures on them so she could try to guess what they were before she opened them. The chap stick and picture in a frame were easy to guess. The last picture she stared at it, totally confused and then said: "Bones?"

I looked over at her, as realization dawned on her face. "Oh, Bones" (I'd given her the first season of Bones on dvd).

We went to see Wall-e (cute, but Finding Nemo is better), then went to the mall. As I drove back to her house after we were done, she did a dramatic reading of Hamlet for me. Yes, yes we are/were English majors.

Random pictures, in no particular order:

During the first week of August my family went up to Hayward to stay in a cabin by the lake for a week. It was amazing. Last year I learned how to water ski and I loved it, so this year I learned how to ski with only one ski.

Photographic proof for the doubters:

Yes, I know that I rock your socks.

I also took portraits of my family:

My dad

My mom

Me

Daniel

Emma

Anna

As many of you may be aware, Emma loves to play with my hair, and I love to take pictures. It is only natural that these two loves meet. As a conclusion to my post, please enjoy...
